The Pinnacle

Description

As part of the Trotternish ridge, the Storr was created by a massive ancient landslide and its geology is composed mainly of ancient lava flows which formed the 50m high in icky outcrop of crumbling basalt. The Storr walk covers a distance of 3.8km, with the average time to complete the walk being 1 hour 15 minutes.

It is said that the Old Man of Storr gets its name because the rock outline and the protruding pinnacle resemble that of the face of an old man. “Storr” itself is Norse in origin and is thought to mean “Great Man”. However, legend has it that the Old Man of Storr was a giant who resided on the Trotternish Ridge. When he was laid to rest upon his death, his thumb, the “Old Man”, remained partially above ground.
